چکیده
The harvester termite Hodotermes mossambicus is not regarded as causing fairy circles. On the other hand, termites forage huge amounts of grass biomass in Namib Desert and beyond. This article describes quite different patterns caused by Desert. In addition to well-known homogeneous foraging pattern this newly hexagonal rare circular from Kunene region northwestern Namibia.

Tick infestation of baboons (Papio ursinus) in the Namib Desert.
Chacma baboons (Papio ursinus) living in an arid environment in Namibia were heavily infested with ticks of the genus Rhipicephalus. A survey to assess tick numbers and identity was undertaken in the baboons' habitat. It appears that there is a strong correlation between the number of ticks and the amount of time the baboons spend in an area. It is speculated that tick infestations were respons...
متن کاملVirome Assembly and Annotation: A Surprise in the Namib Desert
Sequencing, assembly, and annotation of environmental virome samples is challenging. Methodological biases and differences in species abundance result in fragmentary read coverage; sequence reconstruction is further complicated by the mosaic nature of viral genomes. In this paper, we focus on biocomputational aspects of virome analysis, emphasizing latent pitfalls in sequence annotation. Using ...
متن کاملNiche-Partitioning of Edaphic Microbial Communities in the Namib Desert Gravel Plain Fairy Circles
Endemic to the Namib Desert, Fairy Circles (FCs) are vegetation-free circular patterns surrounded and delineated by grass species. Since first reported the 1970's, many theories have been proposed to explain their appearance, but none provide a fully satisfactory explanation of their origin(s) and/or causative agent(s). In this study, we have evaluated an early hypothesis stating that edaphic m...
متن کاملHabitat use by radio-tagged Namib Desert golden moles (Eremitalpa granti namibensis)
The Namib Desert golden mole (Eremitalpa granti namibensis) is morphologically, physiologically and behaviourally specialized for living in the harsh loose-sand desert. Ecological studies have relied on visually tracking animals on the surface of sand dunes. A radio tag would allow individuals to be more reliably located, even while under the sand. We developed a radio attachment and gathered p...
متن کاملGenetic variation in the feral horses of the Namib Desert, Namibia.
Genetic variation at 7 blood-group and 10 biochemical genetic loci was examined in 30 horses from a feral herd from the Namib Desert of Namibia, Africa. The observed genetic variability was extremely low compared with that found in domestic horse breeds. The low variation was most probably a result of recent small population size and a small founding population size. Genetic comparison of the N...
